I visit my first child today after 22 years of sponsorship. Evelin is her name. She and her Mom are sitting in
the Children International office in Cartagena, Colombia. Evelin is sleepy and painfully shy - at least at first.
It was important to see her living conditions, which are stark, to say the least. Stiflingly hot, dark, dirty and
overcrowded.
Contrast that with our day at the mall: bright lights, colorful, cool and inviting. After a chicken lunch,
Evelin gets to be a care-free child at the arcades. Candy and merry go-rounds bring out smiles and laughter.
I think she'll remember this day for a very long time. I know I will.
Would you say that a smile makes all the difference?
