| October 20, 2004 One of my main pet peeves: that 15% of every paycheck disappears into the black hole called Social Security. The system was doomed to fail from its inception in 1935. The only question is when the whole decrepit thing comes crashing down and what will happen in its wake. Whatever the particulars, it won't be pretty. God help the next generations! Here's a letter sent to the Wall Street Journal on the subject, specifically to the wretched level of debate from our equally wretched presidential candidates: There can be no doubt that Sen. Kerry is trying to scare the elderly - an indication of his shameless lust for power. On the other hand, President Bush has been in office for nearly four years and he and the Republican majority in Congress have done nothing to address the massive Social Security liabilities that grow larger by the day. I hope you're not suggesting that anything meaningful will happen about Social Security with a second Bush term. Like his predecessors, he will leave the mess to someone else to solve. After all, telling Americans the truth about FDR's national Ponzi scheme would require honesty, leadership, a sense of purpose, and an understanding of limitations on state power. Like everything else the government touches, its attempts to "help" society plan for retirement have widespread and ruinous consequences. Self-reliance, personal responsibility, and private charity have been destroyed by those in Washington who claim to be our saviors. That we believe in the government's ability to direct our lives speaks volumes about our collective gullibility. |
