THE BROOD
December 29, 2008

Maria and her four siblings have one thing going for them: a stable family environment.  Both parents are there for them,
even if the usual conveniences we take for granted are unavailable to them.  Her father, despite having to work on the day
of my visit, takes a few minutes out of his day to meet me, which means a lot.   I think the photos below show a man who
has grown tired in his efforts to provide the basics.  I can only imagine the pressure he is under.

Maria is quite shy at first, and she admits to being nervous about my coming, but she's a wonderful kid that warms up to
me as time passes.  I initiate the first contact, but as the day goes on, she holds out her hand to me.  As I bid adios, she
holds me tighter than I expect from such a frail girl.

Maria wants to be a teacher when she grows up.  My goal is to see that she realizes her dream.
